History of Casa Lis
Building a Modern Mansion
The Casa Lis started as a fancy home built for its first owner, Miguel de Lis. A talented architect named Joaquin de Vargas y Aguirre designed it. Miguel de Lis owned a successful business that made leather (a tannery). This business made him quite wealthy. He had traveled a lot and wanted a very modern house for his time, which is why he chose a "modernist" style.
From Home to Museum
After Miguel de Lis, the mansion changed hands in 1917. A man named D. Enrique Esperabé de Arteaga, who was the head of the University of Salamanca, moved in with his family. Over the years, different people lived in the Casa Lis. But by the 1970s, the house was empty and started to fall apart. It was in danger of being ruined!
Luckily, in 1981, the city of Salamanca stepped in. They decided to save this important building from decay. The city worked to restore the Casa Lis, bringing it back to its former glory. Thanks to their efforts, this amazing mansion was transformed into the museum we can visit today, sharing its history and beautiful art with everyone.
