Casa Lis facts for kids
The Casa Lis is a special museum located right by the old city wall in Salamanca, Spain. It's also known as the Museo Art Nouveau and Art Déco. This museum shows off beautiful art and objects from the late 1800s until World War II. It's a great place to see how art and design changed during that time.
History of Casa Lis
The museum building used to be a big house. It was built for its first owner, Miguel de Lis. An architect named Joaquin de Vargas y Aguirre designed it. Miguel de Lis owned a successful factory that made leather, which he inherited from his father. Because his business was doing so well, he had a lot of money and had traveled a lot. He chose a modern style for his new home.
From Home to Museum
The house changed owners in 1917. Enrique Esperabé de Arteaga, who was in charge of the University of Salamanca, moved in with his family. Later, different people lived in Casa Lis. By the 1970s, it was empty and started to fall apart. But in 1981, the city of Salamanca stepped in and saved the building from being completely ruined. They decided to turn it into the amazing museum we see today.
