History of Casa del Gavilan

The Casa del Gavilan means "House of the Hawk." It is a unique home built from adobe, which is a natural building material made from earth and straw. This beautiful villa was finished in 1911. It was built for a couple named Jack and Gertrude Nairn, who came from Connecticut.

Becoming a Historic Landmark

Today, the Casa del Gavilan is owned by a group called Gavilan Limited Liability Company. Some people in this group have connections to the nearby Philmont Scout Ranch. Philmont is a very famous high-adventure camp for Boy Scouts.

Because of its age and importance, the Casa del Gavilan was added to two special lists in 2017. It was listed on the New Mexico Register of Cultural Properties and the National Register of Historic Places. These lists recognize buildings and places that are important to history and culture.
