Cash is a small, unincorporated community located in the southern part of Hunt County, Texas, in the United States. It's about 5 miles (8 km) south of a larger town called Greenville, right along State Highway 34. Being "unincorporated" means it's not officially a city with its own local government, but rather a group of homes and businesses in a county.

How Cash Got Its Name

Cash was started in the mid-1890s. A man named Edward H.R. Green, who was the president of the Texas Midland Railroad, helped create the community.

It was first called Sylvia. The area grew into a place where people farmed. Later, residents wanted to change the name to Money, after a local store owner named John A. Money. However, postal authorities didn't approve that name. So, the name Cash was chosen instead. A post office opened in Cash in 1895, and John A. Money became the first postmaster.

Life in Cash Today

As of 2000, about 56 people lived in the Cash community. Even though it's a small place, Cash has its own small volunteer fire department. This department helps keep the community safe.

Becoming a City

In 2009, the people of Cash had a vote to decide if they wanted to become an official city. If they had voted yes, Cash would have had its own local government.

However, most people voted against it. Out of 79 votes, 62 (about 78%) said no to becoming a city. Only 17 people (about 21%) voted yes. Because the vote failed, Cash remained an unincorporated community.

Location and Connections

Even though Cash is a small, rural place, it is considered part of a much larger area. This area is called the Dallas–Fort Worth–Arlington metropolitan statistical area. This means that Cash and Hunt County are connected to the bigger cities of Dallas and Fort Worth.

Education

Students living in the Cash area attend schools in three different independent school districts:

  • Boles ISD
  • Greenville ISD
  • Quinlan ISD
