What is Cast Two Shadows About?
This book takes place in 1780, during the American Revolution. The story is set in Camden, South Carolina. We meet fourteen-year-old Caroline Whitaker. She lives with her stepmother, Sarah, and her older half-sister, Georgia Ann.
Their large plantation home is taken over by British soldiers. These soldiers are led by Colonel Rawdon. He is even trying to win over Georgia Ann.
Caroline's Journey
Caroline is the daughter of the plantation owner and a slave. She was raised by Mama Sarah. She has a special bond with her caretaker, Miz Melindy, who is also her grandmother.
Caroline and Miz Melindy go on a journey to find Johnny. He is like a brother to Caroline. Johnny decides to join the American patriots. This happens after a British officer treats him badly. The officer wanted Johnny's valuable horse, Grey Goose.
Horses and Conflict
Johnny's horses cause a lot of trouble in the story. His most prized horse is Fearnaught, a very fast mare. Grey Goose is his second favorite. These horses lead to many arguments and difficult situations. One conflict involves Caroline getting hurt because of a horse-related incident.
The novel explores themes of family, loyalty, and freedom. It shows what life was like for people during the American Revolution.
