The town is about 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) from Sabadell and 11 kilometers (6.8 miles) from Terrassa. These two cities are the main centers of the region. Exploring the History of Castellar del Vallès

Early Human Settlements

The first signs of people living in this area go back a very long time. Around 7000 BCE, early humans were present here. By 5000 BCE, during the Neolithic period, people started farming.

Later, around 700 BCE, there was a small burial ground from the Iron Age. This shows that people continued to live and thrive in the area.

Roman and Visigothic Times

In 2005, workers found old remains while fixing the town center. They discovered evidence of a Roman town from the 4th and 5th centuries. This included burial sites and tools for farming.

After the Romans, a Visigothic settlement took over from the 6th to the 13th centuries. This shows a long history of different groups living in Castellar del Vallès.

The Original Village and Its People

Part of the very first village, called Castellar Vell, was dug up between 1995 and 2001. This area dates back to the Carolingian period. A large cemetery was found there with 250 burials from the 11th, 12th, and 13th centuries.

The people of Castellar have always had strong ties to the marquises of Castellar. These noble families now live in Barcelona.

Natural Events in Castellar del Vallès

The area has experienced some significant natural events. Between 1968 and 2006, there were many forest fires. The biggest one happened in July 1983, burning 75 hectares (about 185 acres). More recently, fires have been smaller.

Heavy snowfalls occurred in 1962 and 2001. A major flood in September 1962 caused damage to factories and farms near the Ripoll river.

From Farming to Factories

For a long time, farming was the main way people made a living in Castellar del Vallès. They grew typical Mediterranean crops like grapes for wine, olives, and wheat. They also grew vegetables.

Since the Middle Ages, people also grew flax and hemp along the Ripoll river. These plants were used to make cloth.

The Rise of Industry

In the 1800s, things started to change. Factories began to use the power of the Ripoll river. They first made wool products, then cotton. This led to a big growth in industry.

Over time, more and more farmland was turned into buildings or industrial areas. This meant farming became a much smaller part of the economy.

Modern Economy and Services

Today, Castellar del Vallès has a modern economy. It is like a "post-industrial society," meaning services are very important. The town has two industrial estates where about 5,000 people work. Many companies in metalworking and wood industries are located here.

The textile company Tolrà was very important for the town's growth. It provided many jobs and also helped the community with various projects. The service sector, which includes things like shops, restaurants, and healthcare, is also a big part of the economy now.
