About Castelló d'Empúries
Castelló d'Empúries is a historic town. It has played an important role in the region's past. Today, it is a charming place to visit.
A Look at Its Past
In the year 1079, Castelló d'Empúries became the main city, or capital, of the Empúries county. This happened because the previous capital, Sant Martí d'Empúries, was too often attacked by pirates.
Between 1325 and 1341, Castelló d'Empúries grew a lot. It became a very important and busy town. However, it stopped being the capital in 1385. This was when the county joined the larger Crown of Aragon.
Where is it Located?
The old part of Castelló d'Empúries is quite close to a newer, bigger town called Empuriabrava. Empuriabrava is a modern urban area right on the beautiful coastline of the Costa Brava.
