History of the Castle
The Castle of La Muela sits on top of a hill called Cerro Calderico. This hill is also famous for its many old windmills. The castle stands high above the town of Consuegra.
Early Days and Expansions
In the year 1183, Alfonso VIII, a king of Spain, gave the castle and its surrounding lands to the Knights of Saint John of Jerusalem. This group is also known as the Knights Hospitaller. After this gift, many parts of the castle were built or repaired. Most of these changes happened in the 12th and 13th centuries.
Later, in the late 1400s, a small church called an hermitage was built inside the castle.
Damage and Restoration
The castle was badly damaged during the Peninsular War. This was a big war that happened in the early 1800s.
In 1962, the castle became property of the local government of Consuegra. This meant the town could take care of it.
A Protected Site
In 2008, the entire Cerro Calderico hill was declared a "historical site." This means the castle, along with the famous windmills, is protected by law. It is considered a very important part of Spain's history and culture.
