A Look Back: Castleberry Hill's History
Early Days and Growth
The area we now call Castleberry Hill was once part of a community known as Snake Nation in the 1850s. Before the Civil War started, this area began to grow with factories. They made things like terra cotta and other building materials. Castleberry Hill also had places for storing cotton and grocery stores.
How It Got Its Name
One of the grocers was Daniel Castleberry. The area was named after him! Daniel Castleberry was an important businessman. He is believed to have won the land in 1821 in a Georgia land lottery. This helped him become a well-known person in the community.
Changes Over Time
By the early 1990s, the neighborhood faced some tough times. It was even used as a setting for movies like Freejack and Kalifornia. But things started to change for the better. In the 1980s, old buildings began to be turned into cool apartments called "lofts." By 1992, there were 120 lofts and 150 people living there!
The Olympic Boost and Modern Revival
The 1996 Olympics brought even more new development to Castleberry Hill. In the early 2000s, the area started a new "renaissance," which means a rebirth or revival. Big movies and TV shows, like The Walking Dead, began filming there. Today, the Castleberry Hill Art Stroll is a very popular event. It happens on the second Friday of every month.
