Castorland Company facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Castorland Company was a business started in Paris, France, around 1792. Its goal was to buy and develop a huge amount of land in northern New York. Important people from America and France, like William Constable and James Donatien Le Ray de Chaumont, were part of this plan.

The land, called Castorland, was meant to be a new home for people. It covered about 210,000 acres, stretching from Lake Ontario into the Adirondack Mountains. The name "Castorland" means "Land of the Beaver" because there were so many beavers there!

The company sent agents, Simon Desjardins and Peter Pharoux, to manage this new land. They wrote a journal about their experiences. This area was seen as a safe place for French people who were escaping a difficult time in France called the Reign of Terror. However, due to problems like poor management and sickness, the Castorland project eventually failed. Much of the land ended up with James LeRay, who sold a large part of it to Joseph Bonaparte, the brother of Napoleon.

Beavers and the Land of the Beaver

Beavers were very important to Castorland. They were even a symbol for the company. The land was named "Castorland" because of the huge number of beavers living there. The French word "Castor" means beaver, so Castorland means "The Land of the Beaver."

The many beavers led to a big fur trade. Beaver pelts were popular for making waterproof hats and coats. They were also used in French fashion. While beavers helped the company at first, they also caused problems. A sickness called Giardiasis, now known as beaver fever, spread among the settlers. This illness made many French people leave. There was no known cure at the time, and people did not realize they needed to clean their drinking water.

French Revolution and New Beginnings

The French Revolution was a major event in France from 1787 to 1799. It caused many French people to leave their home country. This was especially true during a period called the Reign of Terror, from 1793 to 1794. During this time, the government took harsh actions against anyone suspected of being against the Revolution.

French people fleeing the Reign of Terror came to Castorland. They hoped it would be an ideal community. Many people bought shares in the Castorland Company quickly. The company promised "all benefits of liberty with none of the drawbacks." However, the Castorland Company did not treat the French settlers well.

More French settlers kept arriving in North America. But most of them were farmers or settled in cities. In 1797, New York State passed a law. This law made it difficult for French people who had fled France to own land. This meant fewer French landowners stayed in Castorland.

Besides the new laws, the sickness (Giardiasis) also made many settlers leave. The unexpected difficulties, poor management, and Napoleon Bonaparte allowing French nobility to return to France in 1802, sealed the fate of the Castorland colony.
