What's the Story About?
The story takes place in London during the late 1700s. At this time, slavery had just become illegal in England. However, it was still common in places like the British West Indies. Pedro, a young man, had been enslaved in the past.
Trouble begins when Pedro's former slave owner, Mr. Hawkins, arrives in London. He tries to take Pedro back, claiming Pedro is his property. Cat bravely stands up to Mr. Hawkins and stops him at first. But Mr. Hawkins promises to return and get Pedro.
Cat's Adventures and Disguises
Cat and her friends, Frank, Lizzie, and Syd, decide to help Pedro. They want to make sure he stays free. Cat soon finds herself in trouble. The Bow Street Runners, who were like the police back then, start looking for her. They want to arrest her for biting Mr. Hawkins after he made fun of her.
To escape the Bow Street Runners, Cat disguises herself as a boy. Her friends Frank and Charlie help her. She then enrolls in a fancy boarding school for rich boys. There, she learns subjects like Latin and fencing, which girls were usually not taught.
Challenges at School
At the school, Cat faces bullying from a boy named Richmond. He is the son of a plantation owner. Richmond and his friends pick on Cat because she is smart and looks "pretty" even as a boy.
One day, they discover Cat has a special medallion. This medallion shows she is against slavery. Richmond and his gang then attack Cat. Luckily, Syd arrives with a clever distraction. He is angry about what happened but realizes Cat is safer at the school for now. The Bow Street Runners are still searching for her outside.
The Fight for Freedom
Meanwhile, Pedro is captured. A man named Billy Shepherd holds him for Mr. Hawkins. Cat discovers where Pedro is being kept. However, she cannot tell the police because she has no proof against Mr. Hawkins.
The story builds to an exciting climax. Mr. Hawkins is about to sail away with Pedro on his ship. But Cat arrives just in time! She brings Lizzie, Frank, Mr. Equiano, and the Duchess with her. They are all there to rescue Pedro. A judge is called to the scene. Cat cleverly uses information she has to convince Mr. Hawkins. She blackmails him into finally setting Pedro free.
