Teucrium marum, often called cat thyme or kitty crack, is a type of plant known as a germander. It has small, oval leaves that might remind you of the herb thyme. However, its strong, musky smell is very different from the gentle scent of regular thyme. Cat thyme is a perennial that grows in a mounding shape. It has soft, grey-green leaves and pretty pink flowers that appear in the summer. This plant is originally from Spain and the western Mediterranean area.
What is Cat Thyme Like?
Cat thyme has oval-shaped leaves that are wider at the bottom. The underside of the leaves feels soft, and their edges are smooth. This plant keeps its leaves all year long.
Flowers and Scent
Its flowers bloom between July and September in the northern parts of the world. They grow in spikes on one side of the stem and are a bright crimson (deep red) color. When you rub the fresh leaves or younger branches, they release a strong, spicy smell. This smell can even make you sneeze! However, if you taste them, they are a bit bitter and create a warm feeling in your mouth.
Growing Conditions
Cat thyme can survive the winter outdoors if the soil is dry and the location is good. It does best when the frosts are not too harsh. Very cold winters can sometimes kill the plant if it's not protected. In warm climates, older cat thyme plants can grow into a shrub about 3 or 4 feet tall.
Why Cats Love It
Just like catnip, Teucrium marum has a special effect on cats. Many cats are very attracted to its scent and enjoy playing with or rolling around in the plant.
