The community is situated where two roads, Route N and Route O, meet. A stream called Winch Creek flows along the eastern edge of Catawissa. It's also historically connected to the St. Louis & San Francisco Railroad, which was an important railway line.

Catawissa was first planned and settled in the year 1858. It's believed that the community was named after a place called Catawissa, Pennsylvania. This was a common practice back then, as settlers often named new places after their hometowns or other familiar locations.
