Cate Shortland (born August 10, 1968) is a talented Australian director and screenwriter. She is known for making movies that get a lot of attention around the world. Some of her famous films include the romantic drama Somersault (2004), the historical drama Lore (2012), and the exciting thriller Berlin Syndrome (2017). She is most famous for directing the superhero movie Black Widow in 2021.

Cate Shortland's Early Life
Cate Shortland was born in a town called Temora, New South Wales, in Australia. She studied filmmaking at the Australian Film, Television and Radio School. There, she won an award for being the most promising student.
Her Career in Film and TV
Cate Shortland started her career by making several short films. These included Strap on Olympia (1995), Pentuphouse (1998), Flower Girl (2000), and Joy (2000). All of these short films won awards.
She also spent three years directing episodes for a TV show called The Secret Life of Us. This show was on Network Ten in Australia.
Making Feature Films
In 2004, Cate Shortland released her first full-length movie, Somersault. This film was shown at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival in France. It was a big step in her career. She also directed an Australian TV movie called The Silence in 2006.
Her second major film was Lore, which came out in 2012. It was first shown in Australia at the Sydney Film Festival. Lore won many awards, including the Audience Award at the Locarno International Film Festival in Switzerland. It also won the top prize at the Stockholm International Film Festival. The film was even chosen to represent Australia at the Oscars, but it didn't make it to the final list.
In 2015, Cate Shortland began working on her third feature film, Berlin Syndrome. This movie first showed at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival in 2017.
