Recent Movie Projects

In 2017, Shortland directed Berlin Syndrome. This thriller is about an Australian tourist who gets trapped in an apartment in Berlin. The film was shown at the Sundance Film Festival, a major event for independent films in the United States.

Her biggest project came when Marvel Studios hired her to direct Black Widow. The movie, released in 2021, tells the story of the Marvel superhero Natasha Romanoff. This made Shortland one of the few women to direct a major superhero blockbuster.
