Cate Shortland (born August 10, 1968) is a talented Australian director and writer for movies and TV shows. She is known for making films that get a lot of praise, like the romantic drama Somersault (2004), the historical drama Lore (2012), and the thriller Berlin Syndrome (2017). Cate Shortland is most famous for directing the big superhero movie Black Widow in 2021.

Early Life and Education
Cate Shortland was born in a town called Temora, New South Wales, in Australia. She went to the Australian Film, Television and Radio School. This is a special school where people learn how to make movies and TV shows. While she was there, she won an award called the Southern Star Award. This award was given to her for being the most promising student.
Directing and Writing Career
Cate Shortland started her career by making several short films. These are movies that are not very long. Some of her early short films include Strap on Olympia (1995), Pentuphouse (1998), Flower Girl (2000), and Joy (2000). These films won awards and helped her get noticed.
Early TV Work
Before making feature films, Cate Shortland worked on a TV series called The Secret Life of Us. She directed many episodes of this show for three years. This experience helped her learn a lot about directing and working with actors and crews.
First Feature Films
In 2004, Cate Shortland released her first full-length movie, Somersault. This film was shown at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival, which is a very important film festival in France. She also directed an Australian TV movie called The Silence in 2006.

In 2015, Cate Shortland began working on her third feature film, Berlin Syndrome. This movie is based on a book and stars Teresa Palmer. It's about an Australian photojournalist who gets stuck in an apartment. The film first showed at the Sundance Film Festival in 2017.
A big moment in her career happened in July 2018. Cate Shortland was chosen to direct the 2021 Black Widow movie for Marvel Studios. This was a huge project, bringing her work to a global audience of superhero fans.
