Caterina Scarpellini was an amazing Italian astronomer and meteorologist. She lived from 1808 to 1873. She made important discoveries, like finding a comet. She also helped set up a special weather station in Rome.

Early Life and Moving to Rome

Caterina Scarpellini was born in a town called Foligno, Italy. Her birthday was October 29, 1808. When she was 18 years old, she moved to the big city of Rome.

In Rome, Caterina started working as an assistant. She helped her uncle, who was in charge of the Roman Campidoglio Observatory. An observatory is a place where scientists study stars and planets.

Discoveries and Achievements

Caterina Scarpellini became a very respected scientist. She was even a member of a famous science group in Florence, called the Accademia dei Georgofili.

Her biggest discovery happened on April 1, 1854. On that day, she found a new comet! Comets are like giant icy space rocks that orbit the Sun.

Besides studying space, Caterina was also interested in weather. In 1856, she helped create a meteorological station in Rome. This station collected information about the weather.

Recognition and Legacy

Caterina Scarpellini's hard work was recognized. In 1872, the Italian government honored her for all her scientific contributions.

She passed away on November 28, 1873. Even after her death, her work continued to be remembered. One of the craters on the planet Venus is named after her. This is a special way to honor scientists who have made a big impact.
