Catesby is a small, unincorporated community located in Ellis County, Oklahoma, in the United States. An unincorporated community means it's a place with a shared identity but without its own local government. It's like a neighborhood that isn't officially a city or town.
The History of Catesby
Catesby was officially founded on July 1, 1902. It was named after a person called Catesby ap Roger Jones. A post office, which is a place where mail is handled, was opened in Catesby on February 18, 1902, by Ella M. Rose. This helped the community stay connected.
Life in Catesby
Even though the post office closed on January 1, 1970, Catesby is still recognized as a legal town site. In 2002, when Catesby celebrated its 100th birthday, it had only two residents. This made it the smallest town site in all of Oklahoma at that time! It's a great example of how some places can be very tiny.
