The Durango Cathedral is a very important and beautiful church in Mexico. Its full name is the Minor Basilica Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. It's located in the historic center of Durango city, right across from the main square called Plaza de Armas. This cathedral is considered one of the most stunning buildings in northern Mexico and is a major symbol of the state. It stands where an older church, the Parish of the Assumption, used to be.
Building the Cathedral
The current building of the Durango Cathedral started being built around the year 1695. A talented architect named Mateo Nuñez designed it. The main construction was mostly finished by 1713. However, the entire project, including all the beautiful interior decorations, altars, and other important parts, was not fully completed until 1844. This means it took many years to finish this amazing church!
