The Our Lady of Peace Cathedral (also known as La Paz Cathedral) is a beautiful Catholic church. It is located right in the middle of La Paz, a city in western Mexico. This important church is the main church for the Diocese of La Paz.
The cathedral stands on a very old spot. This is where a mission was first started by a group of priests called the Jesuits. They built their mission here way back in the 1700s.
History of the Cathedral
The church you see today was not the first one built here. The current building was constructed much later. Work on it began in the second half of the 1800s. Bishop Francisco Escalante y Moreno was in charge of its construction.
What Does It Look Like?
The outside of the cathedral has a neoclassical style. This means it looks a bit like ancient Greek and Roman buildings. It has a grand front entrance and two tall towers. This style was very popular in buildings across the Spanish Empire.
Inside the Cathedral
When you step inside, you will see some amazing things. The church has beautiful Baroque altarpieces. These are large, decorated screens behind the altars. They are very old, from the 1700s. What's cool is that these altarpieces were moved here from other missions. Those missions had been left empty, so their treasures found a new home.
