The Our Lady of Peace Cathedral is a Catholic church in the city of La Paz, Mexico. It is also known as La Paz Cathedral. This important building is the main church for the Catholic community in the area. It stands where a mission was first started by Jesuit priests way back in the 1700s.
History of the Cathedral
The church you see today was built in the second half of the 1800s. A leader named Bishop Juan Francisco Escalante y Moreno gave the orders for its construction. The original mission was founded on November 3, 1720. The current cathedral was established in 1865.
Architecture and Design
The outside of the cathedral looks like it's built in a neoclassical style. This means it uses ideas from ancient Greek and Roman buildings. It has a grand front entrance and two tall towers that look like twins. This style was very popular in buildings across the Spanish Empire for a long time.
Inside the Cathedral
When you go inside the church, you will see beautiful altarpieces. These are special decorated screens behind the altar. They are from the 1700s and are in a style called Baroque. This style is known for being very fancy and detailed. These altarpieces were brought from other missions that were no longer used.
