History of the Cathedral
Early Days for Malankara Catholics in the US
Many Malayalis people moved to North America from India in the 1960s and 1970s. A lot of them settled in New York City. These new arrivals were Syro-Malankara Catholics. They held prayer meetings and special church services when priests from their church visited the United States.
A leader named Chorbishop John Melamparampil helped organize these groups. He found a place for them to worship in a school basement in Manhattan.
Forming a New Parish
On November 7, 1993, the St John Chrysostom Malankara Catholic Church was started as a mission on Long Island. For a while, they used three different Roman Catholic churches for their services. Then, on November 13, 2011, St John Chrysostom became a full parish. It was located at the St Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Church in Elmont.
The Cathedral is Established
The St Vincent de Paul Cathedral Parish was officially created on September 8, 2013. This was done by Baselios Cleemis, a very important leader of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church, and Thomas Mar Eusebius. To form this new parish, two existing parishes were combined: St John Chrysostom on Long Island and St Basil in Queens.
Becoming an Eparchy
On January 4, 2016, the church organization was upgraded. It changed from an "exarchate" to an "eparchy." An eparchy is like a diocese, which is a larger area managed by a bishop. It was renamed the Syro-Malankara Catholic Eparchy of St. Mary, Queen of Peace, of the United States of America and Canada.
On August 5, 2017, Philipos Stephanos was chosen as the second Bishop for this Eparchy. He officially started his role on October 28, 2017.
