History of the Cathedral
Early Days for Malankara Catholics
Many Malayalis people, who are from India, moved to North America in the 1960s and 1970s. Among them were Syro-Malankara Catholics. A lot of these families settled in New York City.
They wanted to keep their faith and traditions alive. So, they started having prayer meetings. When priests from the Malankara Church visited the United States, they would celebrate their special church services.
Growing the Community
A leader named Chorbishop John Melamparampil helped organize the Malankara Catholics. He found a place for them to worship. It was in the basement of the Guardian Angel School in Manhattan.
On November 7, 1993, a new church group, called a "mission," was started on Long Island. It was named St John Chrysostom Malankara Catholic Church. For a while, they used three different Roman Catholic churches for their services.
Becoming a Parish and Cathedral
Later, on November 13, 2011, St John Chrysostom became a full "parish." This meant it was a more official church community. It was located at the St Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Church in Elmont.
On September 8, 2013, the Cathedral Parish of St Vincent de Paul was officially created. This happened when Baselios Cleemis, a top leader of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church, and Thomas Mar Eusebius helped combine two existing church groups. These were St John Chrysostom on Long Island and St Basil in Queens.
On January 4, 2016, the church organization in the US and Canada grew even more. It was promoted to an "eparchy," which is like a diocese. It was renamed the Syro-Malankara Catholic Eparchy of St. Mary, Queen of Peace, of the United States of America and Canada.
On August 5, 2017, Philipos Stephanos was chosen as the second Bishop for this Eparchy. He officially took on his role on October 28, 2017.
