History of the Cathedral
Building the Church
This cathedral was first known as the Matriz Cathedral. It was built on land that kind neighbors donated. Construction started a long time ago, on March 18, 1799. It took many years to finish. The building was finally completed on March 18, 1831.
Becoming a Cathedral
In 1955, something special happened. Pope Pius XII made a special decision, called a "bull." This decision officially made the church a "Cathedral Church." This meant it became more important than another big church in Huancayo, the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception. The cathedral is dedicated to the Holy Trinity. The city of Huancayo itself was dedicated to the Holy Trinity back in 1572.
