Catherine Dorothea Burdett (born 1784 – died May 14, 1861) was an Irish novelist. She wrote stories that were often inspired by her own life experiences.

About Catherine Dorothea Burdett

Catherine Dorothea Browne was born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1784. Her mother was Frances Corry, whose brother was a Member of Parliament named Isaac Corry. Her father was Colonel William Browne of Glengarry. He served in the American Revolutionary War.

Her Family Life

Colonel Browne worked in Ireland to recruit soldiers for the army. After he passed away in 1813, his family faced a legal issue. The government wanted to check his financial records. This case went on for more than ten years.

In 1806, Catherine married Captain George Burdett. He was a widower and a captain in the British navy. Captain Burdett had fought in important wars. These included the Napoleonic Wars and the War of 1812. The family lived at Longtown House in County Kildare.

Catherine and George had three children. Their son was named George. Their two daughters were Frances Elizabeth and Catherine Jane.

Her Writing Career

Catherine Burdett published her first novel in 1827. She continued to write many books after that. Her stories often came from things she had experienced herself. When her books were published, they were credited to Mrs C. D. Burdett.

Sadly, her husband, Captain Burdett, died unexpectedly in 1832. Catherine Burdett herself passed away in 1861. She was visiting Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, at the time.
