Catherine FitzCharles was born in 1658. She was the daughter of Charles II of England, who was the king, and Catherine Pegge. Because her parents were not married, Catherine was considered an "illegitimate" child.

Catherine had an older brother named Charles FitzCharles. He was made the first Earl of Plymouth by their father, King Charles II.

What Do We Know About Catherine?

Not much is known for sure about Catherine FitzCharles's life. This makes her story a bit of a mystery!

The Nun Theory

Many people believe that Catherine became a Benedictine nun. Nuns are women who dedicate their lives to God and live in a special community called an abbey.

Life at Dunkirk Abbey

It is thought that Catherine lived at Dunkirk Abbey in Dunkirk, France. During the time King Charles II was ruling, it was common for young women from important English families to become nuns.

Catherine is believed to have taken the religious name Sister Ophelia. She might have lived at the abbey until she died in 1759. If this is true, she would have been an amazing 101 years old!
