The Catskill Fly Fishing Center and Museum is a special place in Livingston Manor, New York. It's a non-profit group, which means it doesn't make money for owners. Instead, it uses its money to help people learn. This center teaches about fly fishing, protects the places where fish live, and helps keep the history of fly fishing alive for future generations. It's located right by the beautiful Willowemoc Creek in the Catskills mountains.

What is the Museum About?

The Catskill Fly Fishing Center and Museum is more than just a museum. It's also an education center and a place for environmental research. Imagine a place where you can see old fishing gear, amazing art, and cool items that show how fly fishing has changed over time. They collect and display these things to help everyone understand the sport's traditions and techniques.

Learning About Fly Fishing and Nature

The center offers many fun and educational programs. You can learn about:

  • River ecology: This is how rivers work and what lives in them.
  • Angling history: The story of fishing through the years.
  • Stream craft: Skills for fishing in streams, like how to be quiet and respectful.
  • Fishing etiquette: Good manners when you are fishing.
  • Fly tying: How to make your own fishing flies, which are fake bugs that fish like to eat.
  • Fly casting: How to properly throw your fishing line.
  • Aquatic entomology: The study of insects that live in water. These insects are important because fish eat them!
  • Stream improvement: Ways to make rivers healthier for fish.

All these programs help people understand how important it is to respect nature and the homes of fish.

History of the Museum

The museum first opened its doors in 1983. It started as a small museum in a storefront in Roscoe, New York. Over the next few years, it grew bigger and better. By 1986, it had more resources and facilities. This allowed them to bring all their activities together and even start environmental camps for kids.

On May 28, 1995, the museum moved to its current home in Livingston Manor. This new location is huge, about 35 acres, and sits right on the banks of Willowemoc Creek. In the same year, they also got ownership of Junction Pool. This is a very important spot because it's where the main stream of Beaver Kill begins.

Special Features and Collections

The Catskill Fly Fishing Center and Museum is home to several important collections and awards:

  • The Fly Fishing Hall of Fame: This honors the greatest people in fly fishing history.
  • The Demarest Rodmakers Gallery: A special display of fishing rods made by skilled craftspeople.
  • The Poul Jorgensen Golden Hook Award: An award given to people who have done great things in fly tying.
  • The Catskill Rodmakers Gathering: An event where rod makers come together.
  • The Hardy Cup: A special competition or award related to fly fishing.
