Where the River Starts and Flows
The Cauquenes River begins in the Cordillera de la Costa. This is a mountain range close to the city of Cauquenes. As the river flows, it passes to the south of Cauquenes city.
Joining Other Rivers
After flowing past the city, the Cauquenes River meets another river. This river is called the Tutuvén River. They join together and continue their journey. Further along its path, the Cauquenes River also picks up water from a few smaller streams.
Journey to the Maule River
Finally, the Cauquenes River flows into the Perquilauquén River. The Perquilauquén River then flows into the larger Maule River. This means the Cauquenes River is part of a bigger river system.
A Unique Direction
Most rivers in Chile flow from east to west. They usually start in the Andes Mountains and flow towards the Pacific Ocean. However, the Cauquenes River is special. Like the Purapel River, it flows in a different direction. The Cauquenes River flows eastward, which is quite rare for rivers in Chile.
