The Cave Creek School is an old school building in Gillespie County, Texas, in the U.S. state of Texas. It was built in 1881. The school joined with the Fredericksburg Independent School District in 1950. Today, the building is used as a place for community events. About the Cave Creek Area
Cave Creek is a small farming and ranching community in Texas. It is about 10 miles north of Fredericksburg, Texas. Many families who settled here in the late 1800s were from Germany. The community gets its name from Cave Creek, a stream that flows through the area. This creek has natural caves along its path.
History of Cave Creek School
The Cave Creek School helped educate children in the community for many years. It was a very important part of life for families living there.
Building the School
In 1865, a man named John Ebert gave 8 acres of his land. This land was set aside so the community could build a school for their children. The first school building was a simple one-room schoolhouse. It opened its doors for students in 1891.
Teachers and Students
James A. Larson was the first teacher at Cave Creek School. Over 68 years, a total of twenty different teachers taught at the school. The school was very busy in 1917 when Cora Hahn taught 82 students. Imagine that many kids in one room!
School Life and Traditions
In winter, a wood stove in the middle of the room kept the school warm. Students helped by bringing in wood to fuel the stove. They were also responsible for cleaning the school.
Graduation ceremonies were a big deal for the whole community. They were an all-day event. Families would enjoy a barbecue picnic. There was also entertainment and an afternoon graduation ceremony. The day ended with a play performed by former students of Cave Creek School.
The School Today
In 1950, the Cave Creek School became part of the Fredericksburg Independent School District. The school building was recognized for its historical value on December 29, 2004. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Now, the old school building serves as a community center. It is a place where people can gather for events and activities.
