Discover Cayo Saetía: Cuba's Wildlife Island
Cayo Saetía is located about 120 kilometers (75 miles) southeast of Holguín. It sits between the Bay of Nipe and the Atlantic Ocean. A special bridge connects the island to the mainland. This bridge helps control the animals that live there.
The closest major town is Mayarí, which is about 20 kilometers (12 miles) to the southeast. The island has a mix of open grassy areas and forests. There are also some swampy parts in the northwest.
A Home for Wild Animals
Cayo Saetía is like a big natural park where many animals roam freely. You can see animals like zebras, water buffalo, and wild boars. Different types of antelope and deer also live here. Horses and cattle share some of the grazing areas too.
Near the resort, you might even spot a camel, several ostriches, and colorful parrots. It's a great place to see animals in a natural setting.
Exploring the Island Resort
Cayo Saetía is home to a resort managed by Grupo de Turismo Gaviota, S.A. There is also a camp for Cuban youth on the island. The resort has a three-star rating and includes a restaurant.
- Jeep Tours: You can't explore the island on your own. However, exciting Jeep tours are available to take you around the animal reserve. This is a fun way to see the wildlife up close.
- Boat and Helicopter Trips: Resorts in the nearby Guardalavaca tourist area offer special boat and helicopter tours to Cayo Saetía. These trips allow visitors to go on safaris and enjoy the island's beautiful white-sand beaches.
The island was once a private holiday home for a Cuban leader and his family until 1994. You can still see the grassy plain where helicopters used to land and take off.
