Ceal Floyer was born in Karachi, a city in Pakistan, in 1968. She studied art at Goldsmiths College in London and earned her degree in 1994. While she was a student, she worked as a gallery invigilator. This means she watched over the artworks to make sure they were safe.

In 1997, Ceal Floyer moved to Berlin, Germany, to continue her art studies at the Künstlerhaus Bethanien. That same year, she won the Philip Morris Prize, an important award for artists.
Awards and Recognition
Later, she received more awards for her creative work. These included the National Gallery Prize for Young Art in 2007 and the Nam June Paik Art Center Prize in 2009. Her art was shown in many places, like the Kunst-Werke Institute for Contemporary Art in 2008. Ceal Floyer's art often made people think deeply. She explored ideas from conceptual art, which focuses on the idea behind the art, not just the finished piece. Her artworks often looked very simple, but they made people think a lot and guess about their meaning. For example, in her artwork called Bucket (1999), you would see a black bucket. You would also hear the sound of water leaking. But if you looked closer, you would find a hidden CD player inside the bucket making the sound!
Another artwork, Matches (2010), showed three boxes of matches on a shelf. This piece played on the word 'matches,' making you wonder if the boxes were similar or 'matched' each other. Her art often showed how two different things could be surprisingly similar. She made us look closely at objects and their names, sometimes making them seem almost the same.
