Cecil, originally known as Cecil Station, is a small community in Taylor County, West Virginia, in the United States. It is an unincorporated community, which means it does not have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it is managed by the county or state.

The Story of Cecil

Cecil got its name in 1898. It was named after a person called Cecil Board. This happened when the railroad lines were built and extended to this area. The railroad brought new life and connections to the community.

A Changing Landscape

Life in Cecil changed quite a bit in the mid-1930s. Between 1936 and 1937, parts of the community had to be moved. This included the local train station. The reason for this big change was the rising waters of Tygart Lake.

Tygart Lake and Its Impact

Tygart Lake is a large reservoir created by the Tygart Valley River Dam. This dam was built to help control floods and generate power. When the dam was completed, the water level rose significantly. This meant that some areas, including parts of Cecil, would be underwater. Because of this, homes and buildings had to be evacuated and relocated to higher ground. This event shaped the community of Cecil, moving it to its current location.
