Major Cecil Stephen Northcote (1878–1945) was a British military officer. He served as a governor in the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan. From 1918 to 1919, he was the governor of Mongalla Province. After that, he governed the Nuba Mountains province from 1919 to 1927.
Early Life and Military Career
Cecil Stephen Northcote was born in 1878. He began his military career as a private. He served in the Cape Mounted Rifles during the Second Boer War. In 1902, he became a second lieutenant. This was in the Bedfordshire Regiment.
In April 1909, Northcote joined the Egyptian army. Later, in February 1912, he was sent to the Sudan Political Service. He was assigned to the Bahr al-Ghazal region. During the First World War, he served in Sudan. His actions there were officially recognized.
Governor of Mongalla Province
Northcote became the Governor of Mongalla Province in 1918. He held this important role until 1919. A governor is like a leader for a specific region. They help manage the area and its people.
When Northcote started his job, his predecessor, R.C.R. Owen, gave him advice. Owen suggested keeping northern traders out of the province. This was to help keep the region peaceful. It was also to prevent wider conflicts from spreading. The idea was to connect with Uganda. This would create a stable area in Africa.
Leading the Nuba Mountains Province
In 1918, many governors in Sudan had military backgrounds. There were fifteen provincial governorships. Eight were held by army officers. Seven were held by civilians. By 1924, this had changed. Northcote was one of the few governors left with a military background.
Northcote was transferred to the Nuba Mountains in 1919. Chauncey Hugh Stigand took over as governor in Mongalla. Northcote continued to serve as governor of the Nuba Mountains province. He stayed in this role until he retired in 1928. Mr. J.A. Gillan became his successor. Northcote passed away in 1945.
