Cecilia Nina Bowes-Lyon, Countess of Strathmore and Kinghorne (born Cavendish-Bentinck; 11 September 1862 – 23 June 1938) was a very important person in the British Royal Family. She was the mother of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, who was the wife of King George VI. This also means Cecilia was the grandmother of Queen Elizabeth II, who ruled for many years.

Her Life Story

Cecilia was born in Belgravia, a part of London, on September 11, 1862. She was the oldest daughter of Reverend Charles Cavendish-Bentinck and his wife, Louisa. Her grandfather was a former British Prime Minister, William Cavendish-Bentinck, 3rd Duke of Portland.

On July 16, 1881, Cecilia married Claude Bowes-Lyon. They got married at St Peter's Church in Petersham, Surrey. Together, they had ten children. When Claude's father passed away in 1904, Claude became the Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne. This meant Cecilia became the Countess of Strathmore and Kinghorne.

The Strathmore family owned two large homes: Glamis Castle and St Paul's Walden Bury. Cecilia was known for being a friendly and welcoming hostess. She was also very good at playing the piano. She managed her homes carefully and even designed the beautiful Italian Garden at Glamis Castle. Cecilia was a very religious person, loved gardening, and enjoyed embroidery. She preferred a calm family life.

During World War I, Glamis Castle was used as a hospital for wounded soldiers. Cecilia helped out there until she became ill with cancer. She had surgery in 1921 and was recovering by 1922. In January 1923, her youngest daughter, Elizabeth, got engaged to Prince Albert, who later became King George VI. When reporters asked for her photo during a difficult time for the Royal Family, she humbly said, "I shouldn't waste a photograph on me." She and her husband were in the royal box at the coronation of their daughter and son-in-law.

Her Final Years

In April 1938, Cecilia had a heart attack during her granddaughter Anne Bowes-Lyon's wedding. She passed away eight weeks later in London, at the age of 75. Cecilia outlived four of her ten children. She was buried on June 27, 1938, at Glamis Castle.

Her Children

Cecilia and Claude had ten children. Here are some of them:
