Baseball Career
Starting with the San Diego Padres
The San Diego Padres chose Cedric Hunter in the third round of the 2006 Major League Baseball Draft. This meant they saw great potential in him as a young player. By 2009, experts at scout.com called him the best young player, or "prospect," in the Padres' organization.
After the 2010 season, the Padres added Hunter to their main 40-man roster. This was a special move to make sure another team couldn't take him in the Rule 5 draft.
On March 28, 2011, Hunter officially made the team's Opening Day roster. This was a huge step, as it meant he was now in the major leagues. During his first game on March 31 against the St. Louis Cardinals, he scored his first run in the MLB.
Moving to Other Teams
A professional athlete's career can involve playing for many different teams. After his time with the Padres, Hunter's journey in baseball continued.
St. Louis Cardinals and Cleveland Indians
On October 25, 2011, the Oakland Athletics claimed Hunter off waivers, meaning they picked him up after the Padres let him go. A few months later, in April 2012, the Athletics traded him to the St. Louis Cardinals. He then played for their Triple-A team, the Memphis Redbirds, which is one level below the major leagues.
In November 2012, Hunter signed a minor league contract with the Cleveland Indians.
Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies
Hunter joined the Atlanta Braves organization with a minor league deal in February 2014.
In January 2016, he signed with the Philadelphia Phillies. He had a very good spring training and earned a spot on their Opening Day team. He was expected to play regularly in the outfield. However, on April 25, 2016, he was moved off the main 40-man roster. After the season, Hunter had to sit out for 50 games for breaking a league rule.
Later Career
Hunter's career didn't stop there. He continued to play for several other teams.
- Cincinnati Reds (2017): He signed a minor league contract and played 14 games for the Louisville Bats.
- Kansas City T-Bones (2017): He joined this team, which is part of the American Association, an independent baseball league.
- Bravos de León (2018-2019): Hunter played in the Mexican League for two seasons. He had a great performance, hitting many home runs and batting well for the team. He was released in December 2019.
