CeeLo Green (born Thomas DeCarlo Callaway on May 30, 1975) is an American singer, songwriter, rapper, record producer, and actor. He is famous for his soulful singing style in hip hop and R&B music. Some of his most well-known songs include "Crazy" with his duo Gnarls Barkley, and his solo hit "... You."

CeeLo Green started his music career in 1991 as a member of the hip hop group Goodie Mob. After releasing three albums with the group, he began a solo career. He later formed the successful duo Gnarls Barkley with producer Danger Mouse. Their song "Crazy" became a huge international hit. Green has also been a coach on the TV singing competition The Voice and appeared in movies and TV shows.

Early Life and Beginnings

CeeLo Green was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on May 30, 1975. Both of his parents worked as firefighters. He started singing in church when he was young. His father passed away when Green was two years old. His mother became paralyzed after a car accident when he was 16 and died in 1993 when he was 18.

At the time of his mother's death, Green's music career with Goodie Mob was just starting. He later wrote songs like "She Knows" and "A Little Better" about his parents. He shared that his mother's death encouraged him to fully pursue his music career.

Music Career Highlights

Starting with Goodie Mob (1991–1998)

Green was a founding member of the Atlanta hip hop group Goodie Mob. The group was part of a larger music collective called the Dungeon Family, which also included the famous group Outkast. Goodie Mob appeared on Outkast's first album in 1994.

Goodie Mob released their first album, Soul Food, in 1995. This album was praised for its unique soulful Southern sound. It helped define the growing Southern rap music scene. During this time, Green also sang backing vocals for TLC's popular song "Waterfalls" in 1995.

The group's second album, Still Standing, came out in 1998. It also received good reviews. Green took on more creative control for their third album, World Party, released in 1999.

Solo Career and Gnarls Barkley (1999–2008)

Around 1999, Green decided to leave Goodie Mob to start a solo career. He signed with Arista Records. His first solo album, Cee-Lo Green and His Perfect Imperfections, came out in 2002. It had a sound similar to other Dungeon Family music. His second album, Cee-Lo Green... Is the Soul Machine, was released in 2004. This album explored Southern rap music more deeply and featured collaborations with artists like Ludacris and Pharrell Williams.

Green then teamed up with DJ Danger Mouse to form the duo Gnarls Barkley. They had met at a university event and worked together on other songs before forming the duo. Their first album, St. Elsewhere, was released in 2006. Its first single, "Crazy", became a massive hit. It reached number one in the UK and was a top five hit in many countries. Rolling Stone magazine called "Crazy" the greatest song of the decade.

Gnarls Barkley released a second album, The Odd Couple, in 2008.

The Lady Killer and Tours (2009–2011)

In 2010, CeeLo Green released his solo album The Lady Killer. This album included his very popular song "... You!". The song quickly reached number one on the UK charts. The Lady Killer became a very successful album, reaching Double Platinum status in the UK.

Green toured extensively in 2010 and 2011 with his all-female backing band called "Scarlet Fever". He performed on many TV shows, including Saturday Night Live and the Late Show with David Letterman. He also performed "Forget You" with actress Gwyneth Paltrow at the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards in 2011. This performance was a tribute to Elton John.

In 2011, Green was scheduled to join Rihanna on her North American tour. However, he later had to drop out due to his busy schedule. He was committed to judging The Voice, writing a book, and recording a new album.

Later Projects (2012–Present)

In 2012, Green released the song "I Love Football." The National Football League chose it as the theme song for Thursday Night Football in 2013.

He performed with Madonna at the Super Bowl XLVI halftime show in 2012. In 2013, Green started his "CeeLo Green Presents Loberace" concert residency in Las Vegas. His autobiography, Everybody's Brother, was released in September 2013.

From June to August 2014, Green toured with Lionel Richie on his "All the Hits All Night Long" tour. Green also formed a new band called the Board Memberz.

In 2015, he released his album Heart Blanche. The lead single, "Robin Williams", was named after and dedicated to the actor Robin Williams. In 2016, Green released new music under the alias Gnarly Davidson. He even attended the 59th Grammy Awards dressed as this character.

In 2017, Green performed at the opening ceremony of the 2017 World Aquatics Championships in Budapest. In 2020, he released the album CeeLo Green Is Thomas Callaway, which uses his birth name in the title. He also reunited with Goodie Mob for their album Survival Kit in 2020.

Television and Film Appearances

CeeLo Green has appeared in many TV shows and films. In 1998, Goodie Mob performed on the TV sitcom Sister, Sister. Green also had a small role in the 1999 film Mystery Men. He has done voice acting for animated shows like The Brak Show, Class of 3000, Robot Chicken, and The Boondocks.

In 2011, Green both acted and performed on NBC's Saturday Night Live. He was one of the original coaches on the singing competition show The Voice for its first three seasons. He returned for a fifth season before leaving.

In 2011, Green performed at WWE SummerSlam. He also appeared as himself in an episode of American Dad! and Parenthood. In 2012, he voiced Murray the Mummy in the animated movie Hotel Transylvania. He also appeared on How to Rock and The Soul Man.

In 2013, Green appeared in the sitcom Anger Management and the film Begin Again. In 2014, he premiered his reality TV series CeeLo Green's The Good Life on TBS.

In 2016, Green competed on Lip Sync Battle and won. In 2017, he guest-starred in the Cartoon Network series Teen Titans Go!. In 2020, he participated as the "Monster" on the British version of The Masked Singer. In 2022, he voiced Shuggie in the Disney+ series The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder.

Other Ventures

CeeLo Green has worked with several well-known brands. He has endorsed products like 7 Up, M&M's, and Duracell. He also owns a part of the sake brand TYKU. In 2011, it was estimated that Green earned a lot of money, mostly from these endorsement deals.

Personal Life

CeeLo Green has a son named Kingston, born in 2000. He was also a stepfather to his former wife's two daughters, Sierra and Kalah.
