History of Celendín
The story of Celendín began a long time ago, during the Colonial era in Peru. This was when Spain ruled over many parts of South America. Spanish families were the first to settle and build the town.
Early Settlers
After the Spanish conquered the area, the King of Spain gave land to his people. Some of these people came to Celendín. Later, in the 1700s, more settlers arrived. These included people from Portugal and Jewish families who had converted to Christianity. They first rented a large farm called 'La Pura y Limpia Concepcion de Zelendin'. Eventually, they saved enough money, about 14,010 pesos, to buy the whole property.
Choosing Leaders
After buying the land, the people of Celendín decided to choose their own leaders. They held elections to pick their first officials. Don Raymundo da Pereyra, who was a Lieutenant-Colonel in the Portuguese Dragon Army, was chosen first. Captain Juan de Burga was elected next. Other lieutenants like Pereyra, Segarra, Texada, Fronton, and Dias y Araujo were chosen to be aldermen, which are like town council members.
New Arrivals
Towards the end of the 1700s and into the early 1800s, families from the Basque region of Spain also came to live in Celendín. Over time, a few Chinese families and people from other parts of Peru also moved to the town, making it a diverse place.
