The Celtis ehrenbergiana, also known as the desert hackberry or spiny hackberry, is a special plant. Many people used to call it C. pallida. This plant is a type of shrub or small tree.
You can find it growing naturally in dry places. These areas include deserts, brushlands, canyons, mesas, and grasslands. It lives in parts of the United States, like Arizona, Florida, New Mexico, and Texas. It also grows in Latin America, all the way south to central Argentina.
What Does It Look Like?
The desert hackberry is the only plant in its group in the US that has thorns. These thorns grow on its branches. In the US, it usually grows as a shrub or a small tree. It can reach up to 3 meters (about 10 feet) tall. But in warmer, tropical places, it can grow even taller!
Its leaves are quite small. They are usually less than 3 centimeters (1.2 inches) long. They are also less than 2 centimeters (0.8 inches) wide.
The flowers grow in small groups called cymes. Each group has about 3 to 5 flowers.
About Its Fruits
The fruits of the desert hackberry are called drupes. They can be orange, yellow, or red. These fruits are juicy and shaped like an egg. They are about 7 millimeters across. Both humans and wildlife can eat these tasty fruits.
