What is Center's History?
Center has an interesting past with a few name changes! Long ago, it was known by a different name: Bascobel.
Bascobel: The First Name
- A post office was opened in Bascobel in 1826. This was an important place for people to send and receive letters and packages.
- The name of the community was changed to Center in 1899.
- The post office in Center eventually closed in 1958.
How Center Got Its Name
The name "Center" came from a person! It was named after a Mr. Center, who worked for the railroad.
Becoming an Official Town
For a period, Center was officially recognized as a town.
- In 1906, the Georgia General Assembly decided to make Center an official "Town of Center." The General Assembly is like the state's main law-making group.
- However, the town's official status, called its charter, was formally ended in 1995. After that, it went back to being an unincorporated community.
