Center (which used to be called Tampico) is a small community in Indiana, United States. It's not a city or town with its own government. Instead, it's part of Taylor Township in Howard County. Center is very close to the city of Kokomo and is considered a suburb of that larger city. This means it's part of the Kokomo area where many people live and work.
History
Center was first planned and settled in 1852. When it was first created, it had a different name: Tampico. This name came from a port city in Mexico. However, there was already another place called Tampico in Indiana, in a different county (Jackson County). To avoid confusion, the community was renamed "Centre." Later, the spelling was changed slightly to "Center." It got this name because it was located in the middle, or "center," of Howard County.
Education
Students in Center go to schools run by the Taylor Community Schools Corporation. This school district provides education for kids living in the area. Taylor High School is part of this district. Its sports teams compete in the Hoosier Heartland Conference (HHC). This conference is a group of schools that play against each other in different sports.
