Howard County is one of 92 counties in the U.S. state of Indiana. In 2020, about 83,658 people lived here. The main city, or "county seat," is Kokomo.
Howard County was first called Richardville County. It was renamed in 1846 to honor General Tilghman Ashurst Howard. Howard County is also part of the larger Kokomo area.

Howard County is located in Indiana. It covers a total area of about 293.92 square miles (761.2 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 293.06 square miles, is land. A small part, about 0.86 square miles, is water.

A Look Back at Howard County's History
Howard County was officially created in 1844. Its first name was Richardville County. This name honored Jean Baptiste Richardville, who was a chief of the Miami Native American tribe. Chief Richardville's name in his language was Pe-che-wa, which means "Wildcat." This is why a local stream is called Wildcat Creek.
In 1846, the county's name was changed to Howard County. This new name honored General Tilghman Howard. He was a U.S. Representative from Indiana and passed away in 1844.

In 2010, about 82,752 people lived in Howard County. There were 34,301 households and 22,604 families. The population density was about 282 people per square mile.
Most people in the county were white (88.6%). Other groups included black or African American (6.9%), Asian (0.9%), and American Indian (0.3%). About 2.7% of the people were of Hispanic or Latino origin. Many people had ancestors from Germany (22.4%), America (15.3%), England (10.8%), and Ireland (10.2%).
About 30.7% of households had children under 18 living with them. The average age of people in the county was 40.7 years.
The median income for a household was $47,697. This means half of the households earned more than this, and half earned less. About 16.4% of all people in the county lived below the poverty line. This included 26.9% of those under 18 years old.
