Alto was once a small, unincorporated town in Howard County, Indiana. This means it didn't have its own local government. Today, Alto is a neighborhood within the city of Kokomo. It became part of Kokomo on January 1, 2012. Alto is also part of the larger area known as the Kokomo Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History of Alto
Alto was officially planned out and marked on a map in 1848. It was first called Olinda. The town was named to remember the Battle of Palo Alto. This battle was an important event in the Mexican–American War.
Tornado Strikes Alto
On April 11, 1965, a very strong F4 tornado almost completely destroyed Alto. This powerful storm was part of a larger group of tornadoes that hit many areas that day. Even though people worked hard to rebuild the town for many years, Alto's population never grew back to its previous size.

John Worth Kern was born in Alto on December 20, 1849. He became a very important leader in the United States Senate during the time of President Woodrow Wilson. He helped guide many important decisions for the country.
