CenterPoint Energy Tower
The original building was finished in 1974. At that time, it was 651 feet (198 m) tall. A big change happened in 1996. An extra 90-foot (27 m) was added to the top. This made the building much taller.
Building History
For many years, the building was the main office for Houston Industries (HI). It also housed its company, Houston Lighting & Power (HL&P). In 1999, Houston Industries changed its name. It became Reliant Energy.
Reliant Energy moved out of the building in 2003. They moved to a new place called Reliant Energy Plaza. This left over 400,000 square feet (37,000 m2) of empty space in the tower.
Design and Changes
The 1996 changes were designed by Richard Keating. He is a famous architect. His design greatly changed how the building looked. It also changed the look of the Houston skyline. Keating also designed the nearby Wells Fargo Tower.
The Unique Canopy
Around 1995, something special was added to the building. The owners added a circle-shaped canopy. This canopy is five stories tall. It was added because a building nearby was taller. Clifford Pugh, a writer for the Houston Chronicle, said it looked like a "hovering spaceship" at night.
