What is the Central Hotel and Brewery?
This historic spot is actually a group of buildings. It includes a brewery, a hotel, and an ice house that connects them. These buildings show us what architecture was like a long time ago.
The Old Brewery Building
The brewery building was built first, way back in 1859. It's a two-and-a-half-story building made of stone. It has a flat roof and a smaller brick part attached to it. You can see big, arched double doors on the stone part.
The Story of the Central Hotel
The Central Hotel was built later, in 1880, by a person named Alois Bube. It's a three-story building with a flat roof. The hotel has a wide, overhanging edge at the top called a cornice. It also has lots of fancy decorations in the Late Victorian style.
The hotel's third floor originally had a different kind of roof, called a mansard roof. But in 1893, a fire destroyed it. The roof was then rebuilt to look like it does today. The hotel and brewery are connected by a three-story building that used to be an ice house.
A Place in History
Because of its unique history and architecture, the Central Hotel and A. Bube's Brewery were added to the National Register of Historic Places on June 4, 1973. This list helps protect important historical sites in the United States.
Featured on TV!
This historic complex even appeared on television! On April 25, 2012, the Central Hotel and A. Bube's Brewery were featured in an episode of Ghost Hunters. This show, which explores spooky places, aired on the Syfy channel.
