Who Built the Central House Hotel?
The Central House Hotel was built by a man named Adam Bobel. He was an immigrant from Prussia, which is a historical country in Europe. Adam Bobel also served as a soldier in the American Civil War. He was part of the 20th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment.
What Happened After the Fire?
In 1881, a fire caused a lot of damage to the hotel. But don't worry, the building was mostly rebuilt after that. This shows how important the hotel was to the community.
How Did a Famous Group Start Here?
The Central House Hotel is most famous for a special event that happened in 1898. The hotel was very busy because of a big meeting for people who worked with lumber. Because there were so many guests, two salesmen had to share a room. Their names were John H. Nicholson and Samuel E. Hill.
The Idea for Gideons International
While sharing a room, John Nicholson and Samuel Hill started talking. They discussed their Christian faith. They realized there was a need for a group that could help Christian travelers. This group would also offer support and recognition to each other.
Founding Gideons International
In 1899, these two salesmen met again. This time, they were joined by another person named William J. Knights. Together, they officially started Gideons International.
