The Central Theater is a historic movie theater located in Ely, Nevada. It was built between 1939 and 1941. This beautiful building is designed in the Art Deco style, which was popular for its sleek, modern look. It was first built by Percy and Warren Hull, who also owned another theater in Ely called the Capital Theater. The Central Theater originally had 725 seats for moviegoers. It stands out in Ely because many other buildings there were built much earlier. The theater has a tall, glowing "CENTRAL" sign outside. Inside, you'll find cool curved walls and a well-kept design.

Building the Central Theater

Work on the Central Theater started in 1939. It cost about $80,000 to build. The theater officially opened its doors on March 29, 1941. The very first movie shown there was called Arizona. People advertised the Central Theater as "The Finest Theater in Eastern Nevada."

A Historic Nevada Landmark

The Central Theater closed for a time on February 4, 1993. However, it was recognized as an important historical place soon after. On August 5, 1993, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This list includes buildings that are important to the history of the United States.

Reopening and New Life

The Central Theater reopened in 2006, bringing movies back to Ely. It closed again in 2011 while its owners tried to sell the building. But good news came on May 25, 2012, when the theater reopened once more. Many people came to see movies there in the weeks after it reopened.

In October 2013, the theater manager, Chris Lani, and his father-in-law, Don Purinton, announced exciting plans. They wanted to buy the theater. This purchase became official in March 2014. Lani and Purinton had big ideas for the Central Theater. They planned to show movies that had already been released. They also wanted to host live shows, concerts, and even sports events. Chris Lani and his brother had also bought the Capital Theater, hoping to fix it up and reopen it too.

Modern Upgrades and Filming Location

In April 2014, the Central Theater got some cool new upgrades. A new projection screen was installed. They also added a digital projector and a modern sound system. These changes were part of the renovation plans by Lani and Purinton. The theater even became a filming location for a movie! Scenes for the 2016 film, The Dark Hand, were shot at the Central Theater. The movie later had its first showing right there at the theater.
