Centropolis is a small community in Franklin County, Kansas, United States. It is called a census-designated place (CDP) because it's a specific area the government counts for population. In 2020, about 100 people lived there. Centropolis is located about 11 miles northwest of Ottawa. In the 1850s, Centropolis was even considered to be the capital of Kansas!
History of Centropolis
Centropolis was first settled in 1855 by a man named Perry Fuller. He opened a store to trade with the nearby Ottawa Native American tribe. His store did well, and in 1856, he started the Centropolis Town Company. He began selling pieces of land for people to build homes and businesses.
The name "Centropolis" is a mix of "central" and "metropolis." A metropolis is a very large city. Fuller hoped his new town would become the county seat (the main town for the county government) and even the capital of Kansas.
A missionary newspaper, published by Jotham Meeker for the Ottawa Baptist Mission, was the first newspaper in Franklin County. Later, the first commercial newspaper in the county, called Kansas Leader, started in 1857.
Just a few miles east of Centropolis, another town called St. Bernard was established. The government decided St. Bernard would be the Franklin County seat. However, St. Bernard did not grow much, and its post office eventually closed.
The Centropolis post office closed in 1930.
