The Cerca de Villaño (which means "Enclosure of Villaño" in Spanish) is a very small piece of land that belongs to a town called Orduña. This is a bit tricky because Orduña itself is like an island of land (called an exclave) that belongs to Biscay. Biscay is a province in the Basque Country region of Spain.

Think of it like this: Cerca de Villaño is a tiny "island" of Orduña, and Orduña is a bigger "island" of Biscay. This small area is found near Villaño, which is a tiny village in the Burgos province. Because it's so small and not very well known, you usually won't see Cerca de Villaño on most maps! Its exact size and borders are not fully clear.

A Look at Its History

We don't know much about the very early history of Cerca de Villaño. But we do know that by the early 1500s, it was already considered part of Orduña.

For a long time, officials from Orduña used to visit Cerca de Villaño regularly. They would check the special markers that showed where its borders were. They kept doing this until 1951. Around the same time, in 1950, the few people who lived in Cerca de Villaño were officially counted as residents of Valle de Losa, a nearby area. After this, Cerca de Villaño became largely forgotten.

What's Happening Now?

In 2015, a member of the local government in Biscay (called the Juntas Generales) asked the government to confirm that Cerca de Villaño was still part of Biscay. However, this idea was not accepted.

More recently, in 2022, the town of Orduña started working to map out Cerca de Villaño properly. They want to include it in their official plans for how the town's land is used. This means they are trying to make sure this tiny, forgotten piece of land is officially recognized again.
