Cerdanyola Art Museum facts for kids
The Cerdanyola Art Museum, also known as Can Domènech, is a cool art museum. You can find it in the old part of the city of Cerdanyola del Vallès. It first opened its doors on September 10, 2009. This museum is part of a bigger group called the Barcelona Provincial Council Local Museum Network. It's also a stop on the Art Nouveau European Route, which connects places with special Art Nouveau designs.
The Museum Building: Can Domènech
The building where the museum is located is very old and special. It was designed by architects Gaietà Buïgas and Eduard Maria Balcells way back in 1894. This building is a great example of Art Nouveau style in the area. Art Nouveau was a popular art and design style from the late 1800s to early 1900s. It often used curvy lines and nature-inspired shapes.
In 2003, people decided to fix up the building. Many groups and individuals helped pay for the repairs. These included the Government of Catalonia and the Barcelona Provincial Council. The restoration work started in 2006 and finished in July 2009. Architect Víctor Argentí was in charge of making sure everything was done right.
What You'll See: The Permanent Collection
The main part of the museum's collection focuses on Art Nouveau and the artists from Cerdanyola. It shows art from about 1880 to 1930. During this time, Cerdanyola was a popular summer spot. Many wealthy families from Barcelona would come here for their holidays.
The museum's art comes from Cerdanyola Town Council and gifts from other groups and people. You can see works by famous artists like Ismael Smith, Josep Togores, Josep Llimona, and Manolo Hugué. A very special part of the collection is the large Art Nouveau stained-glass windows. They are known as the Tríptic de les dames de Cerdanyola, which means "triptych of the ladies of Cerdanyola."
