Ceredig ap Cunedda was an early king in Wales. He lived a long time ago, around the 400s. The area he ruled, Ceredigion, is even named after him! He was an important figure in shaping the history of this part of Wales.
Who Was Ceredig?
Ceredig ap Cunedda was born around the year 420. He was born far away from Wales, in a place called Manaw Gododdin. This area is now known as Lothian in Scotland.
He was one of the many sons of a powerful leader named Cunedda. Cunedda was also the grandfather of Saint David, a very famous Welsh saint.
Moving to Wales
Ceredig and his family moved to what is now modern Wales. They came from Gododdin, their home in the north. They were invited to help protect the land.
At that time, invaders from Ireland were causing trouble. Ceredig and his family helped to push these invaders back.
A New Kingdom
Ceredig was brave and helped his father a lot. As a reward, his father gave him land in north-west Wales. This land had been taken back from the Irish invaders.
This new area became Ceredig's own kingdom. It was named Ceredigion after him. This name is still used today for one of the main areas of Wales.
Ceredig's Family
Ceredig married a woman named Meleri. She was one of the many daughters of King Brychan Brycheiniog. Brychan ruled a kingdom called Brycheiniog, which is now Brecknockshire.
Ceredig and Meleri had children together. One of their daughters was named Ina. People believe that Ina became a saint. She is known as Saint Ina. There is even a church dedicated to her. It is called St Ina's Church and is in Llanina, near New Quay, Ceredigion.
