History of Chínipas
Chínipas started as a mission town. It was founded by Jesuit missionaries, Pedro Juan Castini and Julio Pascual. They established it on December 31, 1626. However, they were both killed, and the mission was destroyed. This happened during a conflict with Native people on February 1, 1632. The mission was later rebuilt in 1676, a little further downstream.
In 1798, gold was discovered nearby. This led to the town growing quickly. Many European settlers moved to Chínipas in the late 1800s. Some well-known family names from that time include Piero, Sarracino, and Santini from Italy. There were also Balderrama from Spain, Schultzes from Germany, and Russos from Sicily. Families like the O'Learys from Ireland (now spelled Alire) and the Bridges from England (now spelled Breach) also settled here. The Willis family from England is now spelled Villis. The biggest mine in the area was called Palmarejo. It was owned by a British company. The mining equipment was made in England. It was shipped to Guaymas on the Sonora coast. Then, it was carried by mules or donkeys to San Bernardo, Sonora. From there, people carried it over the mountains on their backs.
