Chabana facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Chabana (pronounced Cha-bah-nah) is a special Japanese word. It means "tea flowers" and refers to the way flowers are arranged for a Japanese tea ceremony. Unlike some fancy flower arrangements, Chabana often looks very natural and simple. People sometimes call this style "thrown in" because it looks so effortless.

This simple flower arranging style is part of a bigger art form called Ikebana (pronounced Ee-keh-bah-nah). Ikebana means "arranging flowers" and is also known as Kādo (pronounced Kah-doh), which means "the way of flowers." Ikebana started a long time ago with flowers offered in Buddhist temples.

Chabana is specifically for the room where the tea ceremony happens. This special room is called a Chashitsu (pronounced Cha-sheet-soo), which means "tea room." The Chabana arrangement helps create a peaceful and beautiful feeling in the Chashitsu for everyone enjoying the tea ceremony.
