Francis White is a famous Irish swimmer who is now retired. He also worked as a swimming coach, helping other athletes.
Francis was born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1955. He started swimming when he was just nine years old. He trained with clubs like Guinness and Kings Hospital. Francis quickly became one of Ireland's first swimmers to achieve big success internationally. He competed for Ireland from 1968 to 1980.

Early Success and College Years
In 1969, Francis showed his talent by finishing sixth in the European junior 1,500-meter freestyle race. Later, he placed tenth in the European senior 100-meter butterfly event.
From 1972 to 1976, Francis attended Villanova University in the United States. He received a special scholarship to swim there. During his time at Villanova, he won two important college titles in 1975. He won the 200-meter butterfly and the 400-meter individual medley. He also set five school records at Villanova.
European Champion
Francis achieved a major victory in 1975. He won the European Cup in the 1,500-meter freestyle event, which was held in Athens. This made him a European champion!
Throughout his career, Francis White won more than 40 Irish national senior titles. These titles were in different swimming styles, including freestyle, backstroke, butterfly, and individual medley. His amazing achievements led him to be named the Texaco Swimming Sportstar of the Year in 1971.
Coaching and Later Achievements
After his competitive swimming career, Francis became a swimming coach. He helped train two swimmers who went on to compete in the Olympic Games. He coached athletes at the 1988 Seoul Olympics and the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.
Even after retiring from top-level competition, Francis continued to swim as a "masters swimmer." This means he competed in events for older athletes. As a masters swimmer, he won several more European titles, showing his lasting skill in the water.
Francis White is also the uncle of artist and songwriter Lauren White Murphy.
